Cooperatives in the land of the châteaux (extract from Le Monde Magazine)

“The relation of the winegrower to the cooperative is multiple. He has a guarantee of remuneration, pooling of resources, collective labour and the ability to offer services that he cannot offer alone, like marketing or even vinification,” explains Olivia Condemine, marketing manager at Producta Vignobles, a commercial entity uniting twenty cooperative cellars in the South-West. Bringing together 2500 winegrowers and present in around forty appellations – Saint-Emilion, Médoc, Saint-Estèphe, Bergerac, Pécharmant, Bordeaux, Monbazillac – Producta Vignobles highlights the terroirs, without hiding the collective aspect, confirms Oivia Condemine. “Should we say that our wines come from cooperative cellars, even though they haven’t always had a good press?” she asks. “For more than fifteen years they have been making real efforts and we should emphasise the values that they put forward.”
